Legal Fellow, University of Georgia School of Law

The First Amendment Clinic at the University of Georgia School of Law seeks a post-graduate law fellow for a one-year appointment with renewal for a second year contingent upon satisfactory job performance and funding availability.

Supported by the Stanton Foundation and officially launched in the Fall 2020 semester, the First Amendment Clinic’s two primary goals are to: (1) defend and advance the rights of free speech, press, assembly, and petition via regional litigation and advocacy, and (2) provide law students with the practice and real-world experience to become leaders on First Amendment issues. The Clinic also serves as a resource for organizations, journalists, students, government employees, and members of the public on issues of open access and free expression in order to promote a better-informed citizenry.

In collaboration with the Clinic Director and existing Clinic Fellow, the Post-Graduate Fellow will engage in client representation and other First Amendment advocacy projects; help supervise law students who are engaging in similar activities; develop and deliver community education through presentations and other programming; assist with coalition building and managing referral relationships with public interest organizations, law firms, journalists, and other stakeholders committed to protecting expressive freedoms throughout Georgia and neighboring states. Some travel may be entailed.

Candidates will possess a JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school and will either be admitted to the Georgia Bar or gain admission within 6 months of starting the position.

Candidates should possess a strong academic record; excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational and time-management skills; an ability to build and maintain relationships with both students and community/professional partners; and a demonstrated commitment to public interest law. Litigation and/or judicial clerkship experience preferred.
